Mi.KI

Engaging migrant communities on social media and with AI

“Mi.KI – Engaging migrant communities on social media and with AI” combines Minor – Digital’s extensive reach within migrant online communities, particularly on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and TikTok, using the Digital Streetwork approach with the advisory services of the Network IQ “Integration through Qualification”. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) and the European Union (EU) via the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus) as part of the Network IQ “Integration through Qualification” programme.

Many migrants face significant challenges in achieving sustainable labour market integration commensurate with their qualifications. The reasons are manifold, including social, economic, and political structures, such as obstacles in the recognition of foreign degrees and qualifications, insufficient language skills, discrimination in the labour market, as well as a lack of knowledge about labour and social rights in Germany. Project description

… The aim of the activation project is to use Digital Streetwork and AI nationwide to support job market integration of non-EU nationals across all industries, professions, and skill levels. The project provides outreach counselling and information on social media for Arab, English, Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish-speaking online communities. Our audience consists of migrants already residing in Germany, particularly women and “hard-to-reach” demographics. Immigrants living in Germany are informed about entry-level and career development opportunities, opportunities and risks within the labour market, as well as about the specialized services offered by the IQ programme.

Outreach counselling and information work takes place predominantly via information shared in groups, allowing all users on social media to read the information. This encourages community members to actively participate in discussions and promotes self-help structures within the communities. The Community Advisors of “Mi.KI” provide information and, if required, make targeted referrals to the appropriate structures of the IQ network – both regionally and supra-regionally.

In addition, “Mi.KI” aims to combat disinformation and misinformation on social media. The project addresses this by correcting misleading or incorrect information in the users’ first language and in a low-threshold manner, pointing to reliable, credible sources and, if necessary, referring users to suitable support services.

The project is active in seven spheres of activity:

  • Outreach counselling on social media regarding the labour market, professional recognition, and labour market integration commensurate with qualifications, as well as demand-oriented referral counselling to the IQ network.
  • Quality assurance through legal supervision and guidance of the outreach counselling and information work.
  • Information work through the provision of multilingual, multimedia informational content.
  • Training of key figures in the online communities as well as actors in the IQ network.
  • Piloting and development of AI tools and guidelines for the use of AI in advisory and information work.
  • Networking and coordinating with actors across the IQ Network and specialised agencies.
  • Publication of guidelines on social media work and use of AI, along with good practice examples from the activation project’s work on social media.
The project “Mi.KI – Engaging migrant communities on social media and with AI” is funded as part of the funding program “IQ – Integration through Qualification” by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the European Union via the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus). Its mission is to improve labour market opportunities for people with a migration background, thereby contributing to the reduction of disadvantages in the labour market.
